That time I got lost on a hike…

This weekend my husband, Biki our doggo, and I set out for a hike.

We drove about an hour outside of San Diego to get some new views and were not disappointed - we found the quietest preserve of about 400 acres of trails winding through the canyons and up the hills.

After we’d walked for a while we had lunch overlooking the mountains (Biki got a bone) and then we decided to head back.

On our way back down we saw another loop, that according to the map, was only .3 miles longer and would get us back to our starting spot but with a new view. So, of course, we opted for new scenery.

Something felt a little off as we walked down this trail. It was heading upwards (where we needed to go) but slightly west, our car was east.

I pointed it out, but we thought maybe it was just a long switchback since it was a steep hill, surely it would loop back around sooner or later.

It did not.

After 40 minutes of walking, we found ourselves at the end of the road standing outside the fence to the border of the preserve.

Whoops.

We didn’t know exactly where we were or exactly how we’d gone wrong but weren’t too worried.

We found a horse trail that went back in the park and seemed to head back in the direction we needed to go. So we followed that sure it would link back up with our original trail.

It did not.

This trail abruptly ended and now we were on top of a ridge looking over the park with no idea how the F we’d gotten so off course

The sun was starting to set now and while we had plenty of food and water and warm clothing I was keen to get back in the car before dark.

We talked over our options. I pushed for us to cut down through the canyon and climb up to the next ridge. It would be kind of risky (and WAY unlike me to suggest this) but I had a strong feeling in my gut that we could do it quickly and our car would be just over that ridge.

So we did.

We ran down, weaving through bushes and trees, jumped over the creek and the pushed straight up to the top of the next ridge. Wouldn’t you know about 10 steps later we were right back on the initial trail we started from and only 5 minutes from our car.

Hallelujah.

Our little canyon crossing probably only took 20 min but it felt like forever.

My heart was pounding (not just cause I was trying to keep up with my super fit husband) but because it was getting darker, I was worried about mountain lions selecting Biki as their evening appetizer, and we were stupidly running through a canyon, way off the trail.

The voices and fears in my head got louder and had my husband not kept pushing ahead, I would have turned back.

I’m telling you all this because as we drove home from our little adventure, it hit me.

We all have a built-in navigation system.

>>>>We have a voice inside (hey there, intuition) that is guiding us, course correcting, and sometimes screaming at us to connect us with our soul - our source. She’s there to guide us along our highest, healthiest, happiest path. <<<<<

But so often our thoughts, doubts, fears and limiting beliefs drown out her voice.

To the point that we get so used to not listening to her that we don’t even realize we’re lost.

What’s worse is that once we realize that we’re lost and try to course correct by listening again to our gut, to honor the feeling we have about what might be right for us - those old stories, lies, and fears pop back up telling us that we can’t, that we’re going to fail, or ‘who the hell you?’ to even think this is possible.

We were SO close to our original trail the entire time.

Had I listened to my inner voice from the very beginning we would have turned around 10 minutes in. *facepalm*

When I tried to listen to her again to literally guide us back home, even though I KNEW it was the best path for us to take - all of my fears and doubts came back in almost making me change my mind.

What do we take away from all of this??

  • No matter how lost, stuck, or broken you might be feeling right now - you already have EVERYTHING inside of you that you need to heal, remember, and unleash your full purpose and power.
  • I COULDN’T hear or listen to that voice until I started to radically take care of myself. I needed to create a foundation of habits that allowed me to quiet the doubts and have the mental and emotional clarity to hear her, first. And it was totally worth it.
  • We all need external accountability - people who remind us of our power and deep inner wisdom to stay the course when those old stories pop up. You need a tribe who will push you, hold space, and help reconnect you to your power along the way.

I’ve spent the last 6 years learning everything that I can about the habits I needed to create to take control of my mood.

I learned how to actually stick with them, even when I felt completely overwhelmed and lacking any form of motivation or self-control.

And I learned how to use these habits and tools to tune so deep within and reconnect with my highest, healthiest, happiest, brightest self.

I won’t lie, it takes serious work.

But it is SO possible and SO damn worth it.
