It’s Not Your Fault You Haven’t Followed Through. You Don’t Suck (Part 2).
You wouldn’t put a three-year-old on a bike without training wheels for the first time and expect him not to crash, would you?
Last post we talked about the first foundational piece needed to ensure success before we even set our goals. We can think of these three pieces like training wheels on a bicycle (that’s right, a bicycle of goal setting). They’re an essential foundation to getting started, and once they’re in place you’ll be cruising along in no time. So let’s dive into these last 2 pieces!
YOUR CHALLENGES
Dreaming and creating a vision around our ‘why’ is essential, but that doesn’t mean we pursue naively. We ALL have barriers of some kind. Some are physical, like lacking transportation or money, bad weather, and chronic diseases and sickness. Others are mental, and just as real as the physical barriers, like a fear of failure, or a lack of time or confidence. Instead of pretending our barriers don’t exist and uncomfortably waiting for them to knock us over, we can face them head on. Get real with your barriers, remember – we all have them. Once you’re clear on what you’re up against, move on to the third piece of our foundation, er training wheel.
Brain dump all possible barriers and challenges. Now divide them into 3 categories.
1) Barriers you have no control over.
2) Barriers that may shift or be temporary
3) Barriers you can control or design around.
YOUR STRATEGIES
Here is where we get to brainstorm any and all possible strategies to move us towards our vision. Any idea goes, the most far fetched or the most obvious. Having trouble coming up with ideas that get around your barriers? Start with category three, the barriers you can control. Ask yourself what the simplest thing is that you could do to move you towards your vision. Once you a have a few strategies in mind, set yourself some goals and get on out there!
When we embark on drastic changes and set goals that we’re not ready for, we set ourselves up for failure and wonder why we don’t feel like we’re enough. WHY ARE WE SO MEAN TO OURSELVES? There is NO shame in taking the time to make sure that we’re clear on our why, barriers, and strategies, before we move forward into setting goals. Make sure you’ve got these 3 pieces in place to ensure you crush your goals and quit the cycle of self-deprecation once and for all (a controlled amount of Game of Throne and ice cream is still more than acceptable).
To your health and happiness,
