Watch Out For This Toxic Positivity

Capture2

I've noticed anytime I share that I'm feeling anxious, sad, lonely, or having any variation of a 'bad' day,

I get lots of well-intentioned (and very much missing the point) comments and messages.

Maybe you've noticed this too?

It happens in both real life from family and friends and on social media. Messages like:

  • Aw poor babe, hope you're feeling better soon!
  • Are you OK???!! Do you need help??
  • Have you considered medication?

To be clear, there is NOTHING wrong with medication. It is quite literally life-saving for some individuals, and there is a whole other conversation needing to be had around removing the stigma around it, particularly in the holistic wellness community.

AND our culture has conditioned people to have zero tolerance for witnessing and holding space for discomfort.

There's a notion in our society that we need to be happy, productive, chill, energized, balanced, and perfectly adjusted at all times or we're mental, crazy, depressed, and in need of intervention.

Frankly, that's just toxic bullshit.

You can exist as a whole, embodied, perfectly enough human being AND experience a range of feelings, emotions, and states. It doesn't make you broken, less than, or needing to be pitied or fixed.

You are allowed to experience and learn from the range and depth of your feelings as a human being without them being too much or needing to be numbed or fixed.

You are not broken because you have feelings, doubts, or anxieties. There's nothing wrong with you for not feeling happy, productive AF, calm, and collected 100% of the time.

Of course, none of this means that we want to feel stuck in our heads, constantly self-doubting and sabotaging our way into terrible, no good, very bad days on the regular.

But the approach we take to moving out of our heads once and for all is NOT through being more disciplined and trying everything possible to fix ourselves.

Truly getting out of our heads and embodying our total enoughness requires:

  • Deepening into massive self-love and unconditional acceptance.
  • Shedding the stories and beliefs that have made you feel less than.
  • Regulating your nervous system
  • Learning to sit with, move, and experience your feelings as the guides they are
  • Identifying and prioritizing your non-negotiable rituals, rhythms, and routines
  • Standing for and seeing that your enoughness is respected in your self-care, your work, and your relationships

Your feelings are valid. So are your desires and the knowing deep down that you are here to live a wild, free, purposeful existence.
