How To Find The Right Coach, Therapist, Healer, Etc.
Let's be honest, finding the right coach, therapist, healer, etc., to support you on your journey can feel exciting, hopeful, and also hugely overwhelming.
To be clear, you already have everything you need within you. You are already a whole, resilient, and competent human, exactly as you are.
And there is a certain kind of power that comes from inviting another human into our journey and allowing them to support and guide us.
It's why over the past 10 years I've invested thousands of dollars into support from coaches, therapists, energy workers, bodyworkers, and other teachers.
It's a process of allowing ourselves to be fully seen and accepted exactly where we are. It also opens us to deeper growth, shedding, and a more authentic expression faster than we could ever accomplish on our own.
It's a BIG step to decide that you're ready to...
- Invite in the support of someone else and let yourself be fully seen
- Make space for the exciting and challenging parts that will come up
- Accelerate your growth and expansion tenfold
Butttttttt deciding that you're ready is just the first step. Then we have to actually find someone that we trust.
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of healing modalities out there. There are excellent and also very not excellent practitioners of said modalities.
How do you begin to sort through different providers, modalities, and know which might be most supportive for you?
As a board-certified coach borderline obsessed with ethical practices, and as a human that's been on the receiving end of healing services, I have some thoughts you might find helpful.
Signs a potential coach/healer/guide etc., might be a good fit for you:
- They create an unconditionally loving and non-judgmental space
- You feel safe, seen, and heard in their presence
- They believe that YOU are your own best healer
- You view them as a guide, not someone to fix you
- They gently and firmly hold you accountable
- You can be open and honest with them
- They are upfront about their privilege, values, and credentials
- They are actively engaging in their own self-care, healing, and anti-racism work
Signs a potential coach/healer/guide etc., might NOT be a good fit for you:
- They are distracted, checking their phone or browser, not fully listening
- You feel unsafe, unseen, judged, or unlistened to
- They tell you what you need to do without considering your input
- You're waiting for them to fix you, not engaging in your own work
- They insist that their process is the best/only way
- They allow you to ramble for the entire session with no structure
- You're afraid to be honest with them
- They're not actively engaging in their own healing
These are a few standards that I've personally found helpful when seeking out guidance and support from others.
I've also found that now I trust my gut first and foremost.
When you've got a 'hell yes!' or a 'hell no' response in your body - listen to it! Your intuition doesn't lead you astray, particularly the more you listen to her!
Do you have anything that you'd add to this list? How do you know when you've found the right person for you?

- What am I hoping to get out of working with this person?
- What's their responsibility vs mine? What do I need to know, ask, or do to ensure my results?
- What are my red flags? What are my green flags?
A client once told me that I was the first provider she'd worked with to not make her feel broken.
While I'm deeply grateful that she felt safe and whole in our work together, it's heartbreaking and unacceptable to me that so many people have such poor experiences with healers.
